Student Milda Okunyte, from Lithuania, who was in her first year at the University of Central Lancashire, was struck by a car as she walked down a country lane near Preston on Tuesday night.

She was found by a passer-by lying in the road at 10.50pm and died a short time later at Royal Preston Hospital.

Police named her after contacting her devastated family in eastern Europe.

A 26-year-old motorist from Lytham St Annes, Lancashire, has been arrested on suspicion of failing to stop at the scene of an accident. He was released on bail until May.

Shocked friends in England and Lithuania have been posting poignant messages to Milda on social media since news of the tragedy broke.

Katie Ryan wrote: “My beautiful soul sister, so wise and talented. It was a privilege to know you, even for such a short time.

“You taught me so much. Our little community here in Preston will never be the same.”

Alicia McWhisky wrote: “RIP Milda, you beautiful soul. You were so vibrant and energetic, with many talents.”

Genevra Lurene wrote: “We’re in absolute bits. Such a wonderful, bright and loving person. You’ll always have a place in our hearts and minds. Too young and too talented to be taken so soon.”

Kieron Rush added: “She had an art that could inspire all her friends. Her inner beauty knew no ends. She shone the way for all to see. Wherever you are, shine a new light, sit among the stars.” Another friend called Karren said: “She had model looks and was just a beautiful person.”

At the time of the accident Milda was wearing black Nike trainers, jeans and a grey hooded top.

Police Sergeant Sean Cunningham said: “This is a tragic incident where a young woman has sadly passed away and specialist officers are supporting her family at this difficult time.

“I would like to thank those who have already come forward but we would still like to speak to anyone with information about the incident.”

Milda was last seen at 3pm on Tuesday in Preston town centre. Sergeant Cunningham added: “We are keen to piece together her final movements and how she came to be on the road.

“Did you see a young woman in the area on Tuesday? Any information could help us with our inquiries.”
