Mr Cameron said that 11-year-old Nancy made her threat in protest over the suspension of the controversial Top Gear host.

He told the BBC: "Nancy has threatened to go on hunger strike unless Jeremy Clarkson is restored.

"I’ve told her this is not necessarily a useful intervention.

"It’s not exactly Gandhi, we had a discussion about this this morning.”

But Nancy's protest seems not to have been particularly long-lived.

The PM's wife, Samantha, added: "Nancy’s hunger strike this morning lasted approximately five minutes."

Mr Cameron added: "It’s between lunch and tea is the way it works."

Clarkson is a family friend of the Camerons and lives near them in Oxfordshire.

The presenter became embroiled in the latest scandal involving a "fracas" with a colleague.

Clarkson was suspended by the BBC after allegedly punching producer Oisin Tymon.

His future at the BBC is likely to be decided this week when the corporation's internal investigation into his conduct is handed over to the director-general.

Last week, the presenter claimed he had been sacked by the broadcasting corporation as he gave an expletive-filled description of BBC bosses while at a charity event in London.

But writing in the Sunday Times, Clarkson said his comments were "all meant in jest".

He said his "choice language" was to help boost the price of his auction item - a lap of the Top Gear test track.

A petition to reinstate Clarkson has so far received more than one million signatures.
