Men and women hurled anti-Semitic abuse after beating up a young Jewish man outside. They chased him inside, breaking windows and attacking others.

But they were beaten back by worshippers wielding chairs.

Scotland Yard said last night it was treating the incident as an “unacceptable hate crime by a drunken mob”.

The disturbance follows a sharp rise in anti-Semitic attacks across Britain.

Young people were gathered inside the Ahavas Torah synagogue in Stamford Hill, north London, when the mob tried to force its way into the building at 1.15am.

David Mocha, 15, said friends were inside and one was attacked with a broken windown frame. “This was defi nitely an anti-Semitic attack,” he said.

“They were shouting ‘kill the Jews’. People were bleeding. There was blood and broken chairs all over the place when I came to clear up."

But Rabbi Maurice Davis said it was anti-social, not religiously motivated. He said: "There is no anti-Semitism or racism in this area."

Hate crimes against Jewish people have risen alarmingly over the last year.

Scotland Yard said four men and two women were arrested.
