The officer in charge of the case, Detective Superintendent Dai Malyn, said his team has made “significant progress” and further arrests are expected.

He warned a number of people who have not yet revealed information about a relationship with Claudia or events leading up to her disappearance to come forward or risk arrest.

Detectives believe a secret sex life is at the heart of the mystery and that her killer was probably a married lover.

Dramatic new information is expected to be released by police tonight. Mr Malyn said: “In the light of information that only recently came to the fore, we are actively pursuing new leads.”

York University chef Claudia, 35, was last seen on Wednesday March 18, 2009.

She was reported missing by her father on Friday March 20. A number of new searches have been carried out since North Yorkshire Police began reviewing the case in 2013.

They include a detailed re-examination of Claudia’s house in the Heworth area of York and a fingertip search of an alleyway leading from the back of the terraced cottage.

Mr Malyn believes the alleyway has “potential significance”.

A 60-year-old man was arrested last year on suspicion of murder but was released without charge. A 47-year-old man remains on police bail on suspicion of perverting the course of justice.
