Eye witnesses said they could see the man "crying his eyes out" after the baby boy was crushed by falling bricks when the pick-up vehicle smashed into the wall on Queens Road, in Stechford, Birmingham.

Amaan Yaseen, who was 19-months-old, was pronounced dead at the scene after suffering devastating head injuries.

The toddler's father is being supported by specially-trained police officers and relatives have paid a moving tribute to the boy.

A statement read: "Last night at approximately 5pm the Yaseen family suffered a tragic loss.

"A member of the family was in the process of parking his heavy goods vehicle, when his truck accidently struck the front wall. The debris from the wall hit Amaan who was only 19-months-old.

"The emergency services were immediately called and despite considerable efforts Amaan was pronounced dead at the scene.

"You will appreciate that this is a very tragic and traumatic incident for any parent to have to experience.

"These parents are distraught and shocked.

"Amaan was a lovely little boy, who brought with him a lot of joy and happiness for the entire family - particularly his parents - and he will be deeply missed.

"The family would wish to thank West Midlands Ambulance Service for their efforts and thepolice for their co-operation and understanding."

A neighbour said: "The dad was driving his van and he obviously didn't see his son. He often reverses it on and off the drive and he hit the wall which collapsed on his lad.

"I could see the man crying his eyes out, he was a mess, he was really in a bad way."

Another resident, Mary Mason, 67, said: "I saw it reversing as I looked out of my window and then it lurched forward and I heard a massive crash. I looked out and their garden wall had collapsed."

Meanwhile 77-year-old Jonathan Davies said: "They are a large family and very close. They are really nice and pleasant. It's very sad this has happened."

Inspector Paul Bennett, of West Midlands police, has urged any witnesses to come forward.

"This is a very tragic set of circumstances," he said. "Words cannot describe what his family are going through and our thoughts are with them at this time.

"Specialist officers will be supporting the boy's family and as with all serious and fatal collisions - an investigation has been launched to establish the cause."
