Having sold more than 70million books in over 30 languages during his career, the author's Twitter account simply posted "The End", this afternoon.

To celebrate the life of one of Briton's most successful novelists, Express.co.uk has rounded-up some of his best quotes:

#10 – Speaking in April 2009, two years after he revealed he had been diagnosed with posterior cortical atrophy disease - a form of dementia.

"If I had been Terry Pratchett the farmer, or Terry Pratchett the dentist, nobody would have paid any attention if I had announced I had Alzheimer's. But there is something fascinating about an author losing the power over words."

#9 – Britain's second-highest selling author keeps his ego in check while addressing himself in a mirror during a first-class flight in May 2010.

"You are only in first class because you put letters in an amusing order. You really don't deserve it."

#8 – After being knighted at Buckingham Palace in January 2009.

"There are times when phrases such as 'totally astonished' just don't do the job.

"I am, of course, delighted and honoured and, needless to say, flabbergasted."

#7 – Joking about euthanasia and his plans for his death in August 2009.

"Legal or not, I intend to end my life on the lawn of my house with a glass of brandy in my hand."

#6 – Speaking about his craft and his battle with  early-onset Alzheimer's.

"It is possible to live well with dementia and write best-sellers 'like wot I do'."

#5 –  Talking about his own philosophy and motivations – today highlighted in his memory by fan and The Office star Ricky Gervais  on Twitter.

"It's not worth doing something unless someone, somewhere, would much rather you weren't doing it."

#4 – The DiscWorld author says he thinks multi-million pound bankers' bonuses should be spent helping to treat dementia patients.

"It would appear to me that me getting up and saying 'I've got Alzheimer's', it did shake people, you cannot help but notice it's in the news an awful lot.

"The thing about Alzheimer's is there are few families that haven't been touched by the disease. People come up to me and talk about it and burst into tears, there's far more awareness about it and that was really what I hoped was going to happen.

"Everybody thinks the Government should be doing more about everything but just think how many of the bonuses which are quite rightly being dragged off certain people, just think to what good causes they could be put - wouldn't that be a lovely thought?"

#3 – Criticising the NHS provision of drugs for Alzheimer's disease, in August 2008.

"It is probably easier to get drugs round the back of a bus station than it is to get medicines."

#2 – Addressing his religious beliefs and making light of his cruel affliction, during an interview in June 2008.

"There is a rumour going around that I have found God. I think this is unlikely because I have enough difficulty finding my keys."

#1 – The final Twitter posts. Written after it was announced the popular author had died, a series of posthumous tweets narrated a fantasy death for the iconic writer.

"AT LAST, SIR TERRY, WE MUST WALK TOGETHER."

"Terry took Death’s arm and followed him through the doors and on to the black desert under the endless night."

"The End."
