London Underground platforms are frequently overrowded during rush hour

The London Underground network was thrown into chaos just before 8am after the woman fell between the train and tracks on the packed platform.

Fire crews were forced to hoist up the carriage to rescue her, according to witnesses.

Paramedics also attended the West London station as well as officers from the British Transport Police and Metropolitan Police.

Witness James Callen wrote on Twitter: "I've just seen a woman get pushed under a tube by accident at Clapham South."

"Sort it out barriers should be on every platform."

Thousands of commuters faced long waits after the Northern Line was suspended between Morden and Kennington for around an hour following the freak accident.

The rest of the line had minor delays.

Nigel Holness, operations director at London Underground, said that the passenger was "recovered by the emergency services with non-life threatening injuries".

A British Transport Police spokesman said that the incident is not being treated as suspicious.

He added: “Our officers were called to Clapham South Underground station shortly after 8am on Thursday, 12 March, after a report of an injured passenger on the northbound Northern line platform.
