Jobcentre staff told to identify potential extremist claimants

JOBCENTRE staff will be asked to identify claimants vulnerable to Islamic radicalisation as part of a crackdown on the threat of homegrown extremism.

New penalties are also to be included in the benefit system all in the hope of curbing extremism

The proposal, disclosed last night, is part of an “unequivocally tough” approach to the threat facing Britain after the unmasking of “Jihadi John”, the Islamic State executioner.

A fresh Home Office counter extremism strategy will try to address widespread anger at those who spread hate towards Britain but live here on benefits from the taxpayer.

It will call for a ban on Islamists working unsupervised with children. New penalties in the benefits system will apply to those who refuse to learn English and integrate properly.

There will be a tightening of the rules on granting citizenship to ensure new residents embrace “British values”.

At the heart of the unpublished strategy is a drive to prevent the radicalisation of young British Muslims.

It calls for an “independent review” of the sharia courts and councils, used by some Muslims to resolve disputes, but which have been accused of imposing “forced marriages or discriminatory divorce proceedings” on women.

The strategy says refugees who would qualify for asylum will be barred if they cross a “threshold” of extremism or opposition to British values.

The document says the Government “will introduce the power to refuse or remove licences to sponsor visa applications from any institution which promotes extremist views or hosts extremist speakers”.

Disturbing new estimates suggest more than 700 jihadists have travelled to Syria to fight with Islamic State.

Of those, about 320 “dangerous” extremists have returned to Britain.

Last night a Ukip spokesman said: “The warning signs have been there since a mob burnt the Satanic Verses, but the multicultural elite was so full of contempt for our own culture that they did nothing.”

The Home Office refused to comment last night.
