The 51-year-old, who joined the BBC in 1986, is hoping to be back at work in time for May's General Election.
In a statement his agent confirmed he would take some time off "over the next few weeks".
The agent added: "His doctors are aiming to get him back at work in plenty of time to cover the election campaign.
"He and his family have asked that they now have the space and privacy he needs in order to rest and recover fully before returning to work."
Following news of Mr Robinson's Twitter was flooded with messages of support.
"Every hack in the land crossing their fingers for the great @bbcnickrobinson who is having treatment for a tumour on the lung," wrote Sunday Times journalist Tim Shipman.
