Alfz Baronins put his victim in a coma after stamping on his head

But Alfz Baronins, 41, from Latvia, is not behind bars because he went on the run when freed on bail last year.

Victim Robert Tuck, 31, who had been recovering from a double brain tumour at the time of the attack, was left in a coma and has had to learn to walk and talk again.

Baronins was found guilty of inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent after a trial held in his absence at Leeds Crown Court. He fled having been granted bail after appearing before magistrates in January last year.

Two other Latvians are also believed to have been involved in the attack but have not been caught.

Labourer Boronins had been in the UK for eight years before the attack. He is thought to have carried out a similar assault six months later. Mr Tuck, a former schools cross country champion, was attacked after being lured to Baronins’s flat.

His injuries have left him unable to use his arm and has to walk with a stick. His mother, Karen, 54, said: “How can a man that is so dangerous be allowed out to roam the streets?”

Det Insp Ian Lawrence, of Leeds CID, said: “Baronins is someone who is capable of inflicting extreme violence and we urgently need to trace him.”
