Craig Radbourne was today jailed

Sergeant Kelly Lawrence was subjected to the horrific ordeal after arresting Craig Radbourne for an alcohol-related offence.

Radbourne, 25, had been handcuffed in her car when he escaped by hitting Sgt Lawrence with his cuffed hands.

He then managed to get out of the door but in the struggle, Sgt Lawrence fell down with him on top of her.

It was then that the body-worn camera which Sgt Lawrence was wearing caught the "vicious and unprovoked" moment when Radbourne banged her head on the pavement twice before fleeing.

The "sickening" video not only captured the brutal attack on 6 July 2014 in Basingstoke, Hampshire - but the horrific sounds that came with it.

Radbourne, from Newport Pagnell, Buckinghamshire, was today sentenced to three years in prison after he admitted assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

**WARNING - DISTRESSING VIDEO**

Craig Radbourne: Video footage shows female police officer's head repeatedly banged on ground during 'sickening' attack

Sentencing Radbourne at Winchester Crown Court, Judge Susan Evans described the assault on Sgt Lawrence - who has served with the police for 10 years - as an "incredibly dangerous act".

She said: "Sergeant Lawrence is an experienced police officer and treated you with courtesy, with professionalism and lawfully put you in her vehicle.

The video was nothing short of sickening

Judge Susan Evans

"You made concerted efforts to try to distract her by suggesting someone was being beaten up in a nearby home. You deliberately and suddenly struck out with her with your handcuffed hands.

"She has never lost a detainee and not surprisingly, and in accordance with her duty she tried her best to detain you.

"The video was nothing short of sickening. To bang someone's head on a pavement is an incredibly dangerous act and the effect of banging her head was immediate.

"Her breathing was shallow and laboured she was in great pain and struggling to speak and her vision was blurred."

Judge Evans also described how Sgt Lawrence - who has since returned to work - had become "nervous towards aggressive males" for some time after the brutal assault.

She added: "She hates the fact that the whole incident has left her judging her performance and confidence.

"The sentence is one of 36 months in prison, 18 months of these will be in custody and you will be out on licence for the remainder."

The attack was caught on a body-camera

Chief Inspector Simon Dodds said afterwards said that body-worn cameras show what some police officers "have to go through".

He said: "I think if you look at the assault in question it was vicious and unprovoked.

"When I first saw the video footage taken from her body-worn camera I could not believe what I was seeing and what I was hearing.

"It's clear that Radbourne had intentions of seriously hurting her. It's a truly horrific attack."

Inspector Stephen Goodier, who is the Hampshire Police's body-worn video officer, praised the work of the wearable cameras and highlighted how they can bring offenders to justice.

He said: "This is a horrible attack and I can't imagine what Sgt Lawrence has been through.

"I'm happy that the judge was able to see the video from the camera and see first hand what officer had to go through.

"Body-worn cameras can really help in bringing offenders like this to justice."
