A potential ebola case has been identified at Edinburgh's Western General Hospital

The patient developed a fever and was taken to the infectious diseases unit at Edinburgh's Western General.

The patient's blood was screened at a specialist lab at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.

And in a statement health board NHS Lothian confirmed: "The patient admitted to the Regional Infectious Diseases Unit at the Western General Hospital earlier today has tested negative for Ebola.

"We have robust systems in place to manage patients with suspected infectious diseases and staff follow tested national guidelines."

In December nurse Pauline Cafferkey, 39, from Cambuslang, near Glasgow, became the first confirmed UK case of ebola after she returned from Sierra Leone.

She was given the all-clear following a three-week fight for her life in London’s Royal Free Hospital.

Latest figures from the World Health Organisation show there have been 23,000 ebola cases and 9,300 deaths in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea since the outbreak started early last year.
