Paul Cummins, who was awarded an MBE for his Blood Swept Lands And Seas Of Red installation, had to inform police after being targeted by letter, email and phone.

He presumed the threats were from activists angry that cash was going to charities which were some how involved in war.

Millions of people queued to see the 888,246 ceramic poppies full the moat at the Tower, which symbolised one for every British or colonial military death during the First World War.

The poppies, which commemorated 100 years since the outbreak of the First World War were then sold off to raise money for a number of military charities including Help for Heroes, the Royal British Legion and Combat Stress.

Mr Cummins told the Sunday Times: "Some were by letter, some by email and some by phone, Even the police got involved. The threats came, I suppose, because they felt that the money was going to charities which in some way were involved in war."

The Tower of London was crowned Britain’s most popular attraction of 2014 by online ticket specialist AttractionTix, thanks to the spectacular display of poppies.

More than 5 million people went to see the sea of red, and it was so popular there was a campaign to extend it.

The Queen also paid tribute to the installation in her Christmas message. She said: "The only possible reaction to walking among them was silence."
