One of just 37 made, the 1961 Ferrari 250 SWB California Spider was found in a barn in France late last year.

The 3-litre V12 engine developed up to 240bhp when it left the factory. Its discovery – under piles of magazines – with 60 other rare cars was likened by auctioneers Artcurial to finding Tutankhamun’s tomb.

The car known as 2935 GT became famous when French heartthrob Alain Delon was pictured in it during filming for 1964’s Les Felins with Jane Fonda.

Delon sold it in 1965 and it changed hands several times until Jacques Baillon, a transport and truck company owner, bought it in 1971.

Baillon hardly drove it and the Ferrari California was hidden away. Despite needing full restoration, it sold in Paris for 16.3million euros (£10.5million) – £12.5million including the buyer’s premium.
