Jak Trueman, 15, was last week told by doctors he had just days to live and spent his final few days selflessly raising money for charity.

The teenager took girlfriend Hannah Boyd, 14, to the prom on Saturday despite fears he would not be able to attend after his health deteriorated.

He was applauded by tearful schoolmates as he attended the event organised at the last minute and needed to take a large pain relief medication to attend.

However, his condition worsened rapidly over the weekend and his mother Alison today revealed on his official Facebook page that he had died.

She wrote: "Devastated and heartbroken to say my beautiful boy has gone to heaven. God bless Jak. I am the proudest mummy ever."

The schoolboy, who had been suffering a rare form of blood cancer called gamma delta T-cell lymphoma, had raised more than £35,000 for charity.

After news of the brave teenager's death emerged, donations to his JustGiving fundraising page shot up and tributes flooded social networking site Twitter.

One user wrote: "Jak Trueman you are the bravest boy we have ever met, we promise that your name will never be forgotten".

While another posted: "Sometimes life just isn't fair but what an inspirational young boy. RIP Jak Trueman."

More than 200 teachers and pupils of his West Calder High, West Lothian, Scotland, watched Jack attend the prom with girlfriend Hannah on Saturday.

I think it is absolutely magical that the school brought the prom forward

Despite being able to stay for only 10 minutes, his mum Allison said she was "overwhelmed" with the kind gesture.

The 44-year-old said: "The prom was about my boy and Hannah.

"He managed to make the evening for 10 minutes through wonderful courage and determination.

"Jak and Hannah are exceptionally close and I think it is absolutely magical that the school brought the prom forward, what they have done this for both of them".

Jak spent the past four months attempting to raise money for research charities that specialise in his condition.

He was told last week that his condition could not be treated and was given days to live.

Since his story came to light, he raised more than £33,000 in less than a week for Leukemia and Lymphoma Research.

Allison said: "A phenomenal amount for my phenomenal boy- making things a little easier knowing others will benefit."

The Rangers fan's story was spoken on Sunday about at Hampden Park during the Scottish League Cup semi-final between Celtic and Rangers.

Fans paid tribute to the youngster with a standing round of applause.
