Maisy Dean discovered the lurking larvae after heating a packet of Morrisons branded boil-in-the-bag rice.

An investigation has now been launched by Morrisons, the fourth largest British supermarket confirmed.

After finding the EIGHT fleshy larvae nestled inside the rice pouch, a queasy young Maisy immediately rushed to tell mother Jenny Hollinshead.

Their stomachs churned when the family realised they had already eaten THREE packets of rice from the same batch.

Ms Hollinshead, of Stockport, contacted the supermarket branch where she had bought the maggot-infested rice as well as Morrisons head office.

She explained: "Maisy has been checking all her food since it happened.

"She's only 12 years old and she could have very easily eaten it.

"At first, I got no apology, they just said they'd look into it and that's what infuriated me.

"They only apologised after I contacted the paper and put something on social media, then they got back to me and apologised."

At the request of the store, Jenny has mailed the packet to the firm's head office so the unpleasant surprise can be fully investigated.

Lorraine Dickinson, the executive customer co-ordinator for the CEO and chairman's office at Morrisons, told Ms Hollinshead that she was "sorry to learn of you and your daughter's findings" in the own-brand rice and asked the family to accept "my sincere apologies".

The full email read:"I was sorry to learn of you and your daughter's findings when opening the rice you purchased from our store.

"Please accept my sincere apologies for this.

"I did refer this matter to our Food Technical Team who have requested, so that a thorough investigation can be completed it would greatly assist if you could return the sample to ourselves for examination.

"Once this information is to hand, please be assured that this matter will receive our prompt attention."
