Shake yobs warmly by throat, says MP

A SENIOR MP was praised by constituents last night after being so disgusted by his town’s rising gang violence he suggested feral yobs be “warmly shaken by the throat”.

Labour stalwart Frank Field, 72, who joined a night police patrol, recently described his Birkenhead constituency in Merseyside as “like Beirut”, due to a failure to tackle “yob culture”.

More than 8,000 incidents were reported between April and September, a council report showed.

The real number is thought to be higher.

After attending one incident where a “gang was causing mayhem in the streets”, Mr Field said that legislation was needed “that warmly shakes them by the throat”.

He said: “The immediate thing we want is powers of the police to be able to react as quickly as we saw the gangs moving around Birkenhead.

"So, instead of being behind the gang, we are in front of them.

"The parents don’t care.

"And that is going to take longer to deal with.”

A resident on the Woodlands estate, Harriet Carter, 74, said: “Mr Field is spot on.

"I don’t go out at night now as I am genuinely shaken by their behaviour.”

Maureen Moore said: “There are too many of them.

"You are too scared to say anything to them.

"They are running us out of our own homes.”

Ch Insp Nick Gunatilleke, of Merseyside Police, said they had worked hard with Wirral Council but “there was still a lot to do”.

Wirral Council was planning to provide sports and recreation facilities for young people.
