David Souaan, 20, who had photos of himself posing with automatic weapons, wept as a judge said he would be jailed.

The student, who denied the charges, was “still bawling his eyes out” as he was remanded in custody before sentencing next year.

His Old Bailey trial was told Souaan, of Bloomsbury, central London, joined a Choudary demonstration.

He had pictures of himself with protesters on his phone.

Souaan, a student at Birkbeck College, in London, had already been to Syria, the court heard.

He is believed to have been in the civil war-torn country in December 2013 and January this year.

He sent a message to a friend: “Hello from Syria.”

On his return, he appeared to have been radicalised.

Apart from footage of the protest, Souaan had images of bodies on his phone and film of a man having his throat cut.

A fellow student told the court: “He started showing me pictures.

"He made reference to these bodies as people he knew.

"They died in battle.”

He boasted of taking one of the photos.

The student added: “He said they were there when it happened.”

Souaan, who has a Syrian father and a Serbian mother, grew up in Serbia.

He was arrested at Heathrow in May before boarding a flight to Serbia.

Sarah Whitehouse QC, prosecuting, said computer files he had showed he planned to go on to Syria.
