A second teenager, aged 13, suffered minor injuries and South Wales Police said it was investigating the circumstances.

The school released a short statement which read: “Our thoughts are with the family, friends and everyone who has been affected by this tragic accident.”

A police cordon was being maintained at the end of the road leading to the school and a Maesteg School minibus was driven away on a flatbed truck.

South Wales Police said they are continuing with their investigations to establish the cause of the collision, and have refreshed their appeal for any witnesses.

“Officers are working closely with both the school community and local residents to ensure all support needed is offered to pupils and their families at this time,” said a police spokesperson.

The Health and Safety Executive was also notified about the incident, the force said.

Ashley's family are continuing to be supported by specially trained officers.
