The women in the syndicate at Calderdale Royal Hospital, Halifax, celebrated their jackpot win at the weekend.

But organiser Debbie Kendall revealed how she did not dare tell her colleagues of the win for nearly a month – in case she had made a mistake.

It was not until the day before the money arrived that she called all the syndicate members together for a meeting and revealed: “We have won some money...£100,000!”

Admin worker Debbie, 60, from Elland, West Yorks, has been at the hospital for 29 years.

She said: “They thought I was joking but then they started whooping and shouting with excitement.

"Goodness knows what other people thought was going on.”

On Friday, the group celebrated the September 13 win with a cheque presentation at The Woodman Inn, in Huddersfield.

The syndicate plays the Health Lottery because of the help it gives to health charities and health-related good causes that are not funded by the NHS.

The Health Lottery operates on behalf of 51 local society lotteries across England, Wales and Scotland.

Charities that have benefitted include Dementia UK, Carers Trust and Royal Voluntary Service.

Debbie added: “It is good to know that buying tickets helps health-related good causes.

"We are going to carry on playing.”
