Staff took less than one day off for colds and flu on average last year – saving the economy £801million.

It is the lowest rate of absenteeism for minor ailments since the annual Fisherman’s Friend Cold and Flu Survey started in 2008.

Six years ago, the average was five days off a year. The poll of 2,000 UK adults also found that eight in 10 workers have not had a sick day off so far this year.

Rob Metcalfe, of Fisherman’s Friend, said: “Many workers believe that if jobs are under threat, those that have shown the most commitment will stand the greatest chance of keeping their positions.”
