A huge crowd, many with flags and banners, gathered outside its Pacific Quay studios in Glasgow following a march from the city centre.

It came after Alex Salmond accused the BBC of colluding with Westminster to derail a Yes vote.

Protesters chanted “BBC, shame on you”, and a banner hung over the building’s entrance called for its political editor Nick Robinson to be sacked.

Mr Salmond clashed with the journalist last week after RBS threatened to register in London if voters back independence.

Mr Robinson was accused of “heckling” as he repeatedly asked the SNP leader about the consequences of RBS moving.

Asked by a Sunday newspaper whether he thought the BBC was biased, Mr Salmond said: “Yes, absolutely. Of course it is.

The problem with Nick... I mean, don’t get me wrong, I like these folk, but they don’t realise they’re biased.”

Critics branded both the campaigners and Mr Salmond as “paranoid”. Tory MSP Alex Johnstone said: “Alex Salmond completely lost the plot, forgot he was aspiring to be a statesman, and took exception to being held to account.”

A BBC spokeswoman said: “We believe our coverage has been rigorously impartial and in line with our guidelines on fairness and impartiality.”
