Lacy Lund, 19, needed rhinoplasty surgery to rebuild her face after her nose "burst" in the brutal attack.

The vicious incident left the cartilage hanging off her nose and the pretty 19-year-old had to wait a year before she could have it operated on.

But, after eventually undergoing surgery, the teen said she now feels like a "completely new person" and she has recently been awarded a title at the Miss Hull beauty pageant.

Miss Lund, from Grimsby in Lincolnshire, said: "It was so horrific being attacked by someone I'd fallen madly for, I didn't see it coming.

"I remember the force he inflicted on my face, I felt my nose burst.

"I was shocked when the surgeons said they would completely re-build it.

"My ex left me completely broken on both the inside and out.

"But now, I've finally got my confidence back and I'm becoming a beauty queen - I'm determined to move on from this.

"I want to share my story to help other women who are victims of domestic violence."

After recovering from surgery Miss Lund said she regained the confidence to leave the house and while she was on a night out with friends someone asked if she had considered modelling.

The compliment gave her the boost to enter the beauty pageant in Hull where she was awarded with the Miss Photogenic title.

The barmaid said: "I'd finally decided I couldn't let the attack and surgery hold me back anymore so I agreed to go out with my friends.

"It was one of the first times I'd been out, and a woman come up to me and asked me if I'd ever considered modelling before.

"I couldn't believe it, it was such a confidence boost.

"After that, I went onto enter the Miss Hull beauty pageant.

"It's been amazing."

Miss Lund's ex-boyfriend Dean Campbell, 22, last summer pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm at Grimsby Magistrates' Court.

He was handed a community order and a £250 fine.

Miss Lund had met Campbell when she was 16 in February 2012 and said that her parents had worried about the relationship after he refused to meet them.

She said when they first became a couple Campbell would shower her with gifts and that she was "under his spell".

But his behaviour started to change after six months when he started calling her names and Miss Lund said it felt like he stopped her seeing friends and family.

She said the night she was attacked in May 2012 she thought she was "going to die".

Miss Lund said: "The night when he attacked me I just kept thinking about my mum, I really thought I was going to die.

"I felt so small and useless I couldn't stop him, he was so heavy and forceful.

"I remember feeling a huge blow to my face and my nose felt like it burst."

She had surgery on her nose in February 2013 and started filming for Channel 4's Beauty Queen Or Bust, a show about the pageant, in February 2014.

Miss Lund said she hopes sharing her story will inspire other women affected by domestic violence to tell someone "before it's too late".
