The pensioner, who lives in Sunderland, has put his longevity down to a “good family, good food and happiness” - and a drop of nightly whiskey.

Mr Singh was born in the Punjab, India, in 1904 but moved to England 50 years ago.

In his impressive lifetime, Mr Singh has lived through two world wars, the sinking of the Titanic, the invention of colour television and the first moon landing.

He said: "I feel very good and very happy. I still feel fit and strong. I pray to the lord to take me when he wants to.”

"I have got a good family behind me and that is why I have got that far.”

Mr Singh is certainly not short of family support with nine children, 34 grandchildren and 63 great grandchildren.

He continued: “I wouldn't have lasted this long if they hadn't looked after me.

"The secret to my long life is a good family, good food and happiness.

"Eat healthy food and look after each other. Family need to look after their elders."

An avid gardener until the age of 107, Mr Singh has never had any operations, still has one of his remaining teeth - and does not require a hearing aid.

Mr Singh has survived his two sisters, four brothers and his wife Narajan Kaur, whom he wed in 1932 as part of an arranged marriage.

From the young age of 10, Nazar helped his family to grow sugar cane, cotton, corn, wheat and later chilli, peanuts, potatoes and rice at their farm.

At the age of 30, Nazar and his younger brother Naranjan Singh, travelled to a different part of India - Quata in Sindh, which is now part of Pakistan, to find work. They spent a year there building bunkers for the army in the Second World War before travelling back to their home village to work on the farm.

His wife Narajan died 11 years ago from a heart attack, aged 90.

Nazar, who sleeps for at least ten hours each night, now lives with his son Chain in Sunderland.

It is understood there are currently only two men in the whole world who are older thanNazar - Sakari Momoi and Yasutaro Koide, who are both Japanese and 111-years-old.
