Samantha Lewthwaite, the widow of 7/7 bomber Germaine Lindsay, is believed to have helped mastermind the Westgate mall attack in Kenya last year, which left 67 dead.

While on the run in Somalia, Lewthwaite is now said to have ditched her band loyal al-Qaeda fighters known as the Suicide Brigade in order to wed suspected terror chief Hassan Maalim Ibrahim.

Lewthwaite's new spouse, also known as Sheikh Hassan, is a senior commander in the radical terror group al-Shabaab.

Mother-of-four Lewthwaite, 30, originally from Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, is said to be one of the key players in the radical terror group which has links to al-Qaeda.

The Daily Mirror reports she will now be given protection from her new husband's heavily-armoured militia.

A senior security insider told the newspaper: "Samantha has given herself great protection with this marriage."

This will be the British-born Muslim convert's third marriage.

She is believed to be among those planning revenge attacks against western targets in Africa following the death of al-Qaeda leader Abubakar Shariff Ahmed.

Ahmed was killed by unidentified gunmen last month as he and a friend were walking from a court in Mombasa, Kenya to a nearby mosque.

He had denied meeting Lewthwaite, who was suspected of helping more than 100 Britons to join the terror group.

Since his death, Kenya has seen a rise in the number of attacks.

Last year a copy of Lewthwaite's manifesto transcribed into English by one her recruits revealed her plans to wage war on westerners.
