Football’s tribute to Hillsborough dead as 96 seats left empty
NINETY-SIX seats were left empty and draped with Liverpool scarves during the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley yesterday as a mark of respect to the football fans killed in the Hillsborough disaster.
This tribute during Arsenal’s match with Wigan, which they won 4-2 on penalties after extra time, will be repeated today for Hull’s tie against Sheffield United.
All games in the top eight divisions in England and the Welsh Premier League started at 3.07pm after a minute’s silence was held to mark the 25th anniversary of the tragedy.
On April 15, 1989, the semi-final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest was halted at 3.06pm. A new inquest into their deaths opened this month.
