The hole, which is 20 feet deep, appeared in Oatridge Gardens, Hemel Hempstead in Hertfordshire at 7.30am today.

It is believed the heavy rain could have washed away the soil under the tarmacked road.

A Hertfordshire police spokesman said: "Police are working with partner agencies, including Dacorum Borough Council, specialist structural engineers and utilities companies to assess the situation.

"The road, and surrounding roads, have been closed for the safety of residents and whilst agencies work at the scene."

There is not thought to be any immediate danger to houses in the road.
