Knee-high socks slip into history
TELLING someone to pull their socks up could soon be a waste of time.
Future generations are likely to be baffled by the phrase as knee-high socks become a thing of the past for British men.
Demand for the long woollen socks has slumped with modern lightweight shoes making them impractical and uncomfortable.
Instead, men wear ankle socks, ultra short sports socks – or no socks at all.
The change brings an end to a century-long tradition exported across the world by Britain’s armed forces.
Ed Watson, of Debenhams stores, said: “Knee-length socks once conquered an empire but now they seem to be fading into history.”
He added: “While some men still refuse to part with tradition, knee-high socks are now worn primarily by school children and Swiss yodelling champions.”
