Hi-tech banking fuels our phobias

MORE PEOPLE are afraid of modern payment methods such as contactless cards and online banking than are scared of spiders.

A quarter of people have “paynuphobia” due to security fears, according to Pay Your Way, a Payments Council education drive.

While a fear of heights tops the list of phobias – it is suffered by two-thirds of people – many are also frightened of hi-tech scams.

Nearly a quarter of paynuphobes confess to wasting time queueing to check a balance and many have incurred a late payment fee for not getting to the bank on time.

One person in seven told pollsters they were being held back by their fear of technology.

Payments Council chief executive Adrian Kamellard said: “Taking control of a fear – whether it is a fear of internet banking or heights – can help improve your quality of life by saving money, time or introducing a new experience.”
