Conservatives are more divided under David Cameron than with John Major, say voters
THE majority of British voters believe the Conservative party is more divided now under David Cameron than with former Prime Minister John Major.
Almost two thirds (61 per cent) believe Mr Cameron does not have the leadership qualities needed to secure a Commons majority at the next general election.
While 56 per cent feel the Prime Minister is in charge of a Tory party more divided than predecessor Mr Major.
Mr Major, who resigned and was re-elected following criticism of his leadership, lost the 1997 general election in one of the biggest defeats since 1832.
The research, conducted by ComRes for The Independent, also revealed support for the UK Independence Party (UKIP) had surged to 17 per cent.
The figure of backing for Nigel Farage's party was a record high for a ComRes poll.
While Labour has dropped four points since last month on 34 per cent, with the Conservatives down two on 30 per cent.
