Blooming boost for cidermakers

APPLE trees are heavy with pale pink flowers – meaning good news for cidermakers.

The blossom – like at Orchard Ground Force in Glastonbury, Somerset, above – is two weeks late because of the cold spring.

But it is the best for a decade and a sign of a good apple harvest on the way.

Spokesman Neil McDonald said: “The plus side of last year’s bad harvest was the trees got a year of rest. In the last few days the trees in our orchards have blossomed beautifully.”
