David Cameron swipes at minister over gay marriage
DAVID CAMERON yesterday slapped down a Tory minister who said the Government was spending too much time on gay marriage.
Divisions in the party have re-emerged as the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill returns to complete its final Commons stages next week.
Speaking on BBC1’s Question Time, Defence Secretary Philip Hammond said: “There was no huge demand for this and we didn’t need to spend a lot of Parliamentary time and upset vast numbers of people in order to do this. I have just never felt that this is what we should be focusing on.”
But a Downing Street spokesman said: “The Prime Minister thinks the right process is being followed.
“The Government has set out the legislative programme and it is the right one.”
