PC Charlotte Work, who visited the baby at Edinburgh’s Royal Infirmary yesterday, said the woman needs to be checked by doctors.

The baby, named Charlotte after PC Work, was found in Hailesland Park in Wester Hailes, Edinburgh, last Thursday.

What I did is part of my job, but I’m honoured she’s been named after me.

PC Work said: “It’s great to see her again and see she’s doing so well. I brought her a Jemima Puddleduck toy as it was my favourite when I was a kid.

“What I did is part of my job, but I’m honoured she’s been named after me.

“It’s important we trace her mother to ensure she gets the medical attention and support she needs.

“I urge her to get in touch with her doctor, attend hospital or contact the police.”

NHS Lothian chief midwife Maria Wilson said: “Charlotte had a very good weekend and has been sleeping and feeding well. She’s lovely.

“We’re encouraging the mother to contact us. I assure her that, if she does, we will treat it absolutely confidentially and give her any support she requires.”

It came as police said they were investigating a possible sighting of the mother. A witness told officers that she saw a woman sobbing “uncontrollably” near the scene half an hour after the baby was found.
