Fury as drink driving ‘idiot’ is spared jail
AN “idiot” driver walked free from court yesterday despite leading police on a 100mph chase for 40 miles down a busy motorway while more than twice over the drink limit.
Police had to use a stinger device to stop serial offender John Wojtowicz, 33, making a U-turn on the M5 as he drove home from a wedding in Nailsea, Somerset to Cwmbran, south Wales.
He admitted dangerous driving, drink-driving and failing to stop following a request from police.
At Bristol Crown Court, Recorder Richard Linford told him he was an “absolute idiot”, sentenced him to 12 months jail suspended for two years, gave him a two-year driving ban and ordered him to do a course to combat his drink-driving problem and 200 hours of unpaid work.
Carole Whittingham, of the Campaign Against Drink Driving, said: “This is no sentence at all."
