Horror of garden birds dying at sea
WILDLIFE experts are investigating the riddle of thousands of exhausted migratory garden birds falling to their deaths at sea.
Stunned fishermen have reported seeing large numbers of disorientated birds dropping from the sky.
It is believed the unusually-strong winds and adverse weather have prevented birds reaching their usual winter
destinations.
Victims have included redwings, robins, fieldfares, bramblings, blackbirds and thrushes.
Fishermen took photos of one incident when about 500 garden birds crashed on to their boat 10 miles off Portsmouth.
The RSPB said: “If this is taking place all along the south and east coast, then the mortality of birds could be very high indeed.”
