Tribute to heroes shot in a ‘cowardly’ attack
TRIBUTES were paid last night to two British servicemen killed in a “cowardly” attack by rogue Afghan policemen.
Corporal Brent McCarthy, 25, of the Royal Air force, and Lance Corporal Lee Davies, 27, 1st Battalion Welsh Guards, were providing security at a meeting in Lashkar Gah on Saturday when they were shot by two men wearing Afghan police uniforms.
Another Afghan policeman shot one of the assailants dead and wounded the second, who escaped.
Defence Secretary Philip Hammond said the lives of Cpl McCarthy, from Telford, Salop, and L/Cpl Davies, from Carmarthen, had been “cut tragically short by a cowardly act of aggression”.
The family of L/Cpl Davies said they had been left devastated.
Cpl McCarthy’s parents John and Sarah, sister Jodie and partner Sarah said: “Brent will always be a hero to his niece Miajay. Life will never be the same for any of us.”

The shooting is the latest attack by Afghan security forces on the Nato troops who are training them to take control of security after coalition forces withdraw in 2014.
Britain has lost 414 personnel since operations began in Afghanistan in 2001.
