Emma Shaw, 22, died while mopping water up from her kitchen floor after wiring work at her flat was tested and approved by an unqualified electrician’s mate.

An inquest jury heard that Chris Tomkins had filled out four safety documents that were also full of errors, but had been checked by his supervisor Neil Hoult.

Both worked for Anchor Electrical and Building Services, Staffordshire.

The inquest at Smethwick Council House in the West Midlands was told that a screw fixing plasterboard had gone through a cable, hitting earth and live wires. They sparked when Emma’s boiler leaked in late 2007.

The jury found that the Asda supermarket worker, who leaves a son, Brayden, now five, had been unlawfully killed.

Emma’s boyfriend, Andy Cross, 29, hoped the Crown Prosecution Service would decide there is now enough evidence to prosecute successfully.

If the electrics had been fitted and tested properly we wouldn’t be here today, and Emma would still be with us, and Brayden would still have his mum.

Her mother Diane Potter, of West Bromwich, said: “If the electrics had been fitted and tested properly we wouldn’t be here today, and Emma would still be with us, and Brayden would still have his mum.”
