MP’s call for referendum
A SENIOR Tory MP yesterday launched a fresh attempt in the Commons to trigger a referendum on Britain’s membership of the European Union.
Bill Cash, chairman of the European Scrutiny Committee, demanded a national poll on moves by the 17 eurozone countries to rewrite the EU’s rulebook and forge closer links to tackle the debt crisis.
Mr Cash, the MP for Stone, used a Ten Minute Rule Bill to raise the issue, telling the Commons that a fiscal union would cause “irretrievable damage” to the UK. His proposal was backed by MPs, but has no legal force.
