Council can evict travellers
MOST of the caravans on the Dale Farm travellers’ site can legally be removed, a judge ruled yesterday.
Mr Justice Edwards-Stuart at the High Court said Basildon Council, which wants to evict 86 families from the illegal site in Essex, could remove caravans from 49 of 51 plots.
But bailiffs can take no action until three judicial reviews have been heard, followed by possible appeals.
A source at Basildon Council, which has spent £22million on the case, hoped the evictions would take place in “days rather than weeks”.
The authority was also told it could remove most of the concrete pitches but the walls, fences and gates must remain, dashing hopes of returning the site to greenbelt land.
