Legend of boxing is made into a turnip
TOURISM chiefs who sent out 130,000 leaflets about boxing legend Randolph Turpin referred to him as Randolph Turnip.
The blunder was printed in leaflets to promote attractions in seaside resort Llandudno, where a bar is named after the former middleweight world champion who defeated Sugar Ray Robinson.
The boxer was once licensee of the Randolph Turpin Bar which is full of memorabillia about his intrepid career in the ring. However, the leaflets now list the pub as “Randolph Turnip’s Bar”.
Bar manager Ron Jones, 57, said: “I was horrified when the leaflets came back from the printers. We had had 130,000 made and distributed. It was too late to bring them all back.
“It is highly embarrassing.”
The leaflets were produced by the Llandudno Attractions Consortium which yesterday said it was investigating the slip-up.
