UK Riots: Student mugged by yobs who ‘helped’ him has op
AN injured student robbed by looters as they pretended to come to his aid underwent surgery to mend his broken jaw yesterday.
The slightly-built youth from Malaysia had been in the UK for less than a month when he was caught up in Monday’s riots in east London and violently mugged for his bike.
Dazed and bleeding Ashraf Haziq, 20, was then filmed as heartless yobs rifled through his rucksack moments after they helped him stagger to his feet.
Yesterday Prime Minister David Cameron referred to the footage as an example of how broken parts of British society had become
Despite his injuries Mr Haziq is said to be in high spirits as he recovers in the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel, east London.
Yesterday his distraught mother said it had been her son’s “dream” to come to England to study. Speaking from her home just outside the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur, Maznah Abu Mansor, 47, said: “It’s terrible, I am so worried because I thought London was a safe place.”
But Mr Haziq has told his family he is determined to continue his accountancy studies in the City of London.
