MEPs vote for free borders with Bulgaria and Romania
BULGARIANS and Romanians will soon be able to travel across Europe without a passport, MEPs decided yesterday.
Their non-binding vote is designed to kick-start plans to expand the passport-free Schengen zone. This allows citizens to move across borders in continental Europe without checks.
But an EU ministers’ meeting today is likely to delay agreeing to bring in the two countries until September amid concerns over their ability to control their borders with non-EU neighbours.
Critics fear enlarging the zone will in turn increase immigrants coming to Britain – which is not part of the border-free area.
