Climber falls to his death
A MAN has died after falling 80ft while climbing a frozen waterfall.
Police called out mountain rescuers at 11am on Boxing Day.
In all 32 volunteers turned out. The man, from the North-east, fell while ice climbing with a companion at Cautley Spout, in the Howgill Fells, near Kirkby Stephen, Cumbria.
A paramedic was winched down from an air ambulance but could not resuscitate him.
Mountain rescue leader Arthur Littlefair said: “We have no criticisms. Sadly, accidents happen.”
