37m still paying by cheque
THREE-QUARTERS of Britons have written a cheque in the past year, with half of people writing one during the past month.
Despite plans to phase out the use of cheques, 37 million adults in Britain have written one in the past 12 months, according to consumer group Which?
Around 41 per cent of people had used a cheque to pay a tradesman, while 23 per cent sent one to a friend or relative as a present, and 14 per cent used one to pay for school dinners or an outing.

The Payments Council says 2018 is the target date for ending the cheque-clearing system.
But it has promised users won’t be left “high and dry”. It is working with charities, consumer groups and small businesses to ensure viable alternatives are in place, including possibly a paper-based payment system.
