Peers face ban over expenses
THREE peers are set to be suspended from the House of Lords today and ordered to repay tens of thousands of pounds of expenses following a sleaze probe.
The trio are expected to be censured in a report from upper house authorities for overnight accommodation claims. All were accused of pretending their main homes were away from London.
Labour-supporting Baroness Uddin, 51, is facing a ban of up to 18 months and is understood to have agreed to repay around £125,000.
Lord Paul, 79, another Labour peer, is understood to be facing a suspension of up to six months and has agreed to pay back £40,000.
Lord Bhatia, 78, who sits as a cross-bencher but has donated money to Labour, faces a ban of between six and 12 months and is to repay voluntarily £27,000.
The claims were investigated by the subcommittee on Lords’ interests.
