Davis, who also presents Dragons’ Den, was interviewing Tory peer Lord Young about his plans to reform health and safety laws in a bid to end Britain’s “compensation culture”.
Responding to the peer’s view that people should be able to do “something stupid” if they wanted, Davis said: “So if I want to smoke cannabis, that is up to me as well?”
Campaigner Debra Bell, who wrote a book charting her son’s cannabis addiction, said: “It is not safe to smoke cannabis and it is very irresponsible to make these comments.”
A spokeswoman for the BBC said: “Evan was in no way condoning the use of cannabis, he simply used it as an example in a discussion about whether people should be allowed to do things that might be harmful.”
