A UK airport has been named the “most stressful” in the UK just months after being crowned the “worst” in the country.

Preply analysed the biggest airports in the country to determine which “offer the worst experience for passengers, using metrics such as ‘stressful’ reviews, lost luggage queries, parking costs, punctuality, and the number of passengers passing through each airport”.

Manchester Airport topped the list to be named Britain’s most stressful airport. It has an average Google review score of three out of five, with 138 of the reviews mentioning the word “stressful”.

It also had over 9,000 mentions of lost luggage, an average delay of 25 minutes, and an average cost for long-stay parking during peak season of £360.

This gave it an “airport stress score” of 6.56, almost 20 percent higher than the airport in second place, London Luton. Luton got a “stress score” of 5.48.

Other airports in Preply’s list of the ten “most stressful” include Bristol, Heathrow, Birmingham, Stansted, Edinburgh, Bournemouth, Gatwick and Leeds Bradford.

A Manchester Airport spokesperson said: “This research is unreliable and contains several factual inaccuracies. It only serves to confuse and mislead passengers.

“We want people to be able to start their holidays at the airport. In February and March every single passenger waited for 15 minutes or less to get to security - most passengers did not queue at all - meaning they were able to enjoy the world class facilities in our departure lounges.

“We are in the middle of a £1.3bn transformation programme which, when it is complete, will mean passengers in the North will be able to enjoy an airport to rival any around the world. Our brand new Terminal 2 has already won the prestigious Prix Versailles for architecture and design.

“We are proud to serve the people of the North with a route network unrivalled outside London and top class facilities - and we look forward to welcoming passengers and showing them just how wrong this ‘research’ is.”

This comes just two months after the airport’s terminals were named the worst in the country. Which? asked 4,000 passengers to score UK airports in 11 categories including seating, staff, queues at check-in, bag drop, passport control and security.

Manchester Airport took the two lowest places in the rankings, with Terminal Three getting a customer score of 38 percent and Terminal One getting 44 percent.

Terminal Two came fifth from last with a score of 50 percent. This put all three of Manchester Airport’s terminals in the top five worst terminals in the UK.

One passenger complained of "huge queues" at check-in, calling the situation a "joke", while others dubbed the airport experience "crowded, noisy, generally stressful".

A spokesperson for Manchester Airport called the Which? research "deeply flawed and misleading", dismissing it as "out of date" and "based on a tiny and unrepresentative sample of the 25 million passengers who travel through Manchester airport every year".
