Boasting a quaint feel and great views, Ashtead could be the king of commuter villages, but what sets it apart from other areas close to London?

Those who work in the capital but want to escape the urban jungle, or can't afford the soaring prices, have opted to move to the village, which is Nestled between Leatherhead and Epsom in Surrey.

The average house price is around £650,000, which can see buyers land a three or four-bed semi with a garden and off-street parking.

Good local schools, parks to stroll through and a hospital, means the village is well-equipped. According to Selecta UK, Ashtead was named the most desirable commuter village.

Researchers used the latest city and country-level data available for essential categories, such as train travel time to London, annual season ticket cost, school ratings, crime ratings and wellness facilities, to rank the capital's commuter villages.

Despite its rural feel, London Victoria can be reached via train from Ashtead in 50 minutes. But for those intent on driving, the M25 isn't far away either.

Local estate agent Loraine Wollaston told SurreyLive of the multitude of amenities the village boasts.

She said: "There are lots of different sports clubs around: cricket, bowls, tennis and gyms. There is a library and three village centres with shops and the superb train station.

"It's nice and safe, with lots of functions going on, it is very community-minded in Ashtead."

She added that the south coast is just as easy to access as the bright lights of London. She also told the publication that there is plenty in the way of nightlife, despite it being a village.

She said: "The village is really easy to get around, there are buses also if you don’t drive which can get you to Kingston and Wimbledon, there is a Tesco and Marks and Spencer in the village too.

"There are lots of options for nightlife, including the Leg of Mutton and Cauliflower and The Woodman, (as well as) Indian, Thai, Italian and Turkish restaurants."
