A delightful road trip has been nominated as one of the best in the UK after those who completed it realised the drive was packed full of spectacular views, pretty little villages and enchanting nature. The route, which stretches from a North Yorkshire powerhouse to a magical little town in the same county, is loved by many - although one of its greatest selling points is the lack of fellow tourists.

The journey starts in York, once arguably the capital of England many years ago, where you can wander around its maze-like old town and soak in the sights of York Minster, one of the world’s most magnificent cathedrals.

Punters are encouraged to stroll around the old city walls which remain largely intact, before nipping into town for a Bettys afternoon tea.

After this, you can trundle over to the small village of Stamford Bridge in the car, the site of one of the most important battles in English history. The Battle of Stamford Bridge took place in 1066 and massively helped the Normans win the decisive Battle of Hastings shortly after.

This is because, when the Vikings invaded the Humber, English King Harold Godwinson was forced to march his army all the way up north to defeat them (at Stamford Bridge), before swiftly going all the way back down to the South Coast - historians argue this fatigue would have helped William the Conqueror’s invasion.

A quick stop off in the market town of Malton is recommended, where you can investigate the wonderful local produce shops on offer, before continuing to Pickering for a night of rest at one of the various B&Bs, guest houses or hotels on offer.

In the morning, you should nip over to Dalby Forest, where there is a huge selection of walking and cycling trails, as well as play areas for the children. You can take in the nearby dramatic moorland scenery too when you drive up to Robin Hood’s Bay. If you stop off at Goathland you can soak in some of the most picturesque views, while also sampling the offerings of some unique shops and eateries.

Whitby is a must-visit seaside town thanks to its gothic charm and famed fish and chips, although this place is admittedly often crowded.

If you want some peace and quiet, head over to Sandsend, where the focus is more on the vast expanses of its stunning golden beach.

The final stop on your unique road trip would be Saltburn-by-the-Sea - this sensational Victorian seaside town has a brilliant funicular as well as some lovely valley gardens.

But the main attraction is the sea - get out there for a quick dip - even if only your ankles - and get back in to the warmth. You won’t regret it.
