London’s Tower Bridge failed to close, causing traffic chaos

The historic crossing was 'stuck open' after it was raised to allow a barge to pass underneath.

Traffic was brought to a standstill earlier today when London’s Tower Bridge failed to close properly.

The historic crossing was scheduled to swing open at lunchtime on Thursday (September 28) to allow the Sailing Barge Adieu to travel up the River Thames.

But the bridge's hydraulically-powered bascules struggled to lower back down again, cutting off a key route in central London.

Eyewitnesses described cheers from the crowds that gathered at the bridge as it eventually swung into position after about half an hour.

Passerby Dave Bushe told The Independent: "I first thought it was nice to see the bridge open, but then realised something might be wrong due to the different angles."

Mr Bushe said he watched for a short time and saw a lot of traffic brought to a halt and two tourist buses waiting on the bridge along with "large" crowds.

He said: "There were cheers from the bridge as it eventually closed with bikes first allowed through and then traffic a moment later."
One onlooker took to X, formerly Twitter, to share an image of the bridge along with the comment: "Tower Bridge got a bit stuck earlier".
Another person quipped on X to "mind the gap".

A spokesperson for the City Bridge Foundation, which operates the bridge, said at around 12.30pm Tower Bridge became stuck in the raised position after a bridge lift.

They added: "The bridge has now been lowered again and is open to road traffic as normal.

"We have taken the decision to cancel remaining lifts today while we investigate the problem, to ensure the road can remain open to motorists and pedestrians.

"Owners of vessels which were scheduled to pass through the bridge today have been notified. We're sorry for any inconvenience caused."
